Used For

  • Amigurumi
  • Dishcloths
  • Bag bottoms
  • Dense, sturdy fabric

The shortest, densest basic crochet stitch — a firm, tightly woven fabric good for anything that needs structure.

Instructions

  1. Insert your hook into the next stitch (or chain).
  2. Yarn over and draw a loop back through — two loops now sit on your hook.
  3. Yarn over again and draw through both loops on the hook, leaving one loop remaining.
  4. Move to the next stitch and repeat.

Tips & Notes

  • Single crochet fabric is dense enough that stuffing won't show through it easily — a common choice for amigurumi.
  • Keep an eye on the last stitch of the row; it's easy to skip by accident since it sits right at the turn.
  • A single crochet foundation row is worked into the chain's V or back bump — pick one and stay consistent for an even edge.
