A taller, more open basic stitch that works up quickly and drapes well — the workhorse stitch behind most crochet garments and blankets.
Instructions
- Yarn over before inserting your hook.
- Insert your hook into the next stitch.
- Yarn over and draw a loop back through — three loops sit on your hook.
- Yarn over and draw through the first two loops only — two loops remain.
- Yarn over again and draw through the remaining two loops.
- Move to the next stitch and repeat.
Tips & Notes
- The standard turning chain for dc is 3 chains, which usually counts as the first stitch of the new row.
- Because you pull through two loops at a time instead of all three at once, double crochet takes two pull-through motions per stitch instead of one.
- Double crochet fabric is roughly twice as tall per row as single crochet, which is why patterns often use it to work up faster.
