A simple diagonal stitch worked over a fabric edge, used to join two edges together or stop raw edges from fraying.
Instructions
- Line up the two fabric edges you want to join, or fold a single edge under to finish it.
- Bring the needle up through both layers from the back, close to the edge.
- Wrap the thread over the edge of the fabric and bring the needle up again a short distance along, always entering from the same side.
- Continue wrapping over the edge and stitching along, keeping your stitches evenly spaced and at a consistent diagonal angle.
- Secure the thread with a small knot when you reach the end.
Tips & Notes
- Whipstitch is worked entirely from one side, which is what gives it its diagonal, candy-cane-striped look along the seam.
- Smaller, closer-together stitches make a stronger and neater seam, especially on fraying fabrics.
- This is the standard hand stitch for joining crochet or knit pieces together, not just woven fabric.
