Advanced Textured

A woven-look fabric built from small tiers of interlocking knitted rectangles.

Work a base tier of small triangles across the cast-on row, increasing each into a full-width triangle before turning to start the next.
For the first full tier, pick up stitches along the edge of a base triangle and work short rows back and forth, decreasing at the edge each row where it meets the next section, until all its stitches are used up — this forms one rectangle, or "block."
Repeat across the row, picking up from the next base triangle or block each time, to complete a full tier of interlocking rectangles.
For subsequent tiers, pick up stitches along the edge of the tier below and work each new block the same way, alternating the direction of the diagonal lean tier by tier.
Finish with a tier of half-triangles that taper the edge back to straight, mirroring the base tier.

Every block is worked in isolation with short rows, so entrelac is essentially knitted patchwork — no stitch is ever carried the full width of the piece.
Because each block is small, entrelac is an excellent way to use up scrap yarn or highlight several colors without any stranding or intarsia bobbins.
The woven look comes from alternating which edge each tier's blocks pick up from — get the alternating direction wrong and the pattern stops interlocking correctly.
