Honeycomb Cable

Advanced Cabled

A dense allover cable pattern of alternating crosses that forms a honeycomb-like lattice.

Cast on a multiple of 8 stitches over a stockinette background.
Work a set-up row or two in stockinette.
Cross row: *slip 2 stitches to a cable needle and hold at the back, knit 2, then knit the 2 stitches from the cable needle (C4B); slip 2 stitches to a cable needle and hold at the front, knit 2, then knit the 2 stitches from the cable needle (C4F); repeat from * across.
Work 3 plain rows in stockinette.
Second cross row: work the same C4B/C4F pattern, but shifted 4 stitches to the right so each new cross interlocks between the pair below it — this offset is what creates the honeycomb cells.
Work 3 more plain rows, then repeat from the first cross row.

The honeycomb effect comes entirely from offsetting alternating cross rows by half the cable width — without the offset, you'd just get vertical rope cables.
Because every stitch gets crossed eventually, honeycomb cable pulls in significantly more than plain stockinette — swatch before committing to a stitch count.
This pattern is easiest to keep track of with a cable chart pinned nearby rather than trying to memorize the row sequence.
