Clusters of double crochet worked into chain spaces, stacked round after round to build the classic granny square — one of crochet's most recognizable motifs.
Instructions
- Make a magic ring (or chain 4 and join with a slip stitch to form a ring) and chain 3 — this counts as the first stitch.
- Work 2 double crochet into the ring, chain 2, then work groups of 3 double crochet separated by chain-2 spaces around the ring until you have 4 groups; join to the top of the starting chain-3 with a slip stitch.
- To start round 2, slip stitch into the next chain-2 space, chain 3, and work 2 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet into that same space — this is your first corner.
- Work 3 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet into each remaining corner space, and 3 double crochet into each chain-space between corners.
- Join each round to the top of the starting chain-3 with a slip stitch, then repeat, adding side groups between corners as the square gets bigger.
Tips & Notes
- Every round after the first adds one 3-double-crochet group to each side, which is what keeps the square perfectly flat as it grows.
- Corners always get a chain-2 space; sides between corners typically get a chain-1 space once the square is more than one round.
- Changing yarn color at the join point of each round is what produces the classic multicolor granny square look.
