Invisible Decrease (Amigurumi)

Intermediate Technique

A decrease worked through only the front loops of two stitches, leaving a much less visible join than a standard decrease.

Insert your hook into the front loop only of the next stitch.
Without yarning over yet, insert your hook into the front loop only of the following stitch as well, so your hook sits through both front loops at once.
Yarn over and draw a loop through both front loops together — two loops now sit on your hook.
Yarn over again and draw through both loops on the hook to complete the decrease as a single stitch.

Working through the front loops only, rather than both loops of each stitch, is what makes this decrease sit flatter and far less visible than a standard single crochet decrease.
This decrease is the standard choice in amigurumi specifically because standard decreases tend to leave a visible gap or bump that fights the smooth, rounded look toys need.
It takes a little practice to find both front loops cleanly with the hook — go slowly the first few times rather than rushing the insert.
