Front post double crochets worked in a grid pattern to build a raised, waffle-textured fabric.

Work a base row in double crochet.
On the next row, work front post double crochet around the post of every stitch across the row, working into the stitches below rather than their tops.
Work a plain row of double crochet.
Repeat the front-post row and plain row alternately, keeping the front post stitches stacked directly above the ones in the previous front-post row.

Stacking every front post stitch directly on top of the one two rows below is what builds the raised ridges into a grid rather than scattered bumps.
Front post stitches use a bit more yarn and pull the fabric in slightly, so waffle stitch pieces come out a little narrower than a plain double crochet swatch with the same stitch count.
This is one of the few crochet stitches that produces a genuinely different right and wrong side, since the ridges only pop forward on the side you worked the front posts from.
